· Advocacy Partner Grants
UCAN awards these grants annually to support experienced civil society organizations that have a strong capacity to be effective advocates for their constituents. Grantees become members of the UCAN network and receive consultation and training to strengthen their organizations and their ability to influence policy. Most grants are for approximately $25,000, and recipients can compete for follow-on funding the next year.
24 advocacy grants were awarded in 2003 and 18 organizations won competition in 2004. 19 AP grants were awarded this year. The list of current and new advocacy partners is available here.
· Advocacy Partner Follow-On Grants
Advocacy partner follow-on grants are for UCAN Advocacy Partners (APs) who have successfully met the goals of their year-long UCAN grant and are seeking a second year of funding. The grants are designed to help APs to achieve a new, more ambitious set of goals after their original grant period ends. The goal is to enable APs to considerably expand upon their initial achievements for the benefit of a broader constituency.
All current AP grantees are invited to apply for follow-on grants after the completion of their current grants. Follow-on grants will generally be for fewer funds than first-time AP grants, because follow-on grantees work more cost-effectively and secure funding from other sources.
· Civil Society Grants
Through implementing partners such as ISAR-Ednannia, UCAN awards civil society grants of up to $3,000 to new and less-developed CSOs. Civil society grantees become part of the UCAN network and receive training to conduct shorter term advocacy efforts, strengthen their financial standing and management structures, and coordinate their efforts with other organizations and local think tanks.

· Innovation Fund Grants
Innovation funds are the most flexible of UCAN’s grant program. Innovation Funds are awarded on a year-round, rolling basis, and therefore have a shorter response time than other grant programs. They support local projects with the potential to quickly and concretely contribute to Ukraine’s growing civil society.
Grants are for up to six months and $10,000, with the average size being $5,000 to $7,500. This grant program is highly competitive and selective. Innovation Funds are specifically for projects that:
- show the potential for making a specific, immediate impact
- require funds quickly because they are timely or capitalize on a specific opportunity; and
- are especially creative or innovative in nature.
There are several categories of the Innovation Fund grants:
· Impact Grants are for innovative initiatives that take advantage of special, time-sensitive opportunities to significantly influence systemic change in Ukraine. Impact grants are usually funded even more quickly than other types of Innovation Funds because of both the urgency and potential impact of the proposed projects.
· Success Grants are for organizations with the potential to significantly amplify the impact of an already successful project through funding for public outreach and education. A success grant enables organizations to broadly communicate the story of a project’s success in building civil society in one of three ways.
· Social Enterprise grants - are projects in which non-governmental organizations raise revenue to use toward their mission by providing goods and services of value to the market.
· AmCham Grants - together with the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, UCAN provides AmCham grants for four types of projects: Community Philanthropy, Corporate Citizenship, Social Needs and Social Enterprises.
• Community Philanthropy projects allow community and business leaders to meet the needs of their communities together, by supporting local foundations or other charities that do innovative fund-raising and pursue sophisticated awareness campaigns.
• Corporate Citizenship projects allow businesses to play a direct role in solving local problems and meeting local needs by providing funding for charity and service programs. Applicants for these grants should focus on new and practical ways of organizing, raising money, and distributing support to vulnerable groups in Ukrainian communities.
• Social Needs grants will be awarded to projects suggesting new, practical, innovative, and realistic mechanisms for increasing community involvement in providing support and services to vulnerable groups – including pensioners, orphans, refugees and many other under-served groups.
• Social Enterprises are projects in which non-governmental organizations raise revenue to use toward their mission by providing goods and services of value to the market.

UCAN will review the Innovation Funds applications several times a year. Here are the different deadlines:

For Success Grants, Social Entreprise grants and AmCham grants UCAN accepts applications year-round and reviews them quarterly. Applications received before September, 30 2005 will be reviewed by October, 31 2005.
